Fourteen years after I started this story – and granted, it spent many of the years in between languishing on my WiP stack – Fan Bait is out of the house!
Why did I finally decide to finish it?
Because the rest of the Power of Zero world had finally caught up to Max. In A Simple Mistake, which I published last year, Jack had hopped on the plane to Tokyo, and suddenly various old plot strands met and meshed.
Not that finishing something so old was easy. Especially not, since Fan Bait hadn’t been left to gather dust. I’d pulled it out periodically and tried to turn it into something else: Jack’s story. Skylar’s story. Ryu’s story. Nothing worked, because Fan Bait is Max’s tale, and it starts all the way back in Zero Tolerance.
I owe a shedload of thanks to everyone who read and commented on Patreon and in the Readers Nook, to the friends who read early versions and suggested improvements, and to my wonderful editor Sue from No Stone Unturned Editing, who spotted exactly where the story had gone astray and what I could do to fix the mess. Sue’s also excellent at spotting -ly adverbs, repetitions, and stray commas – but we take that one as read.
So here is Fan Bait, an m/m romantic suspense novel set in Japan. It’s a story about a bodyguard haunted by his past, a rock star fighting for his future, and an impossible choice that could destroy them both.
I hope you enjoy – and don’t miss the first of probably several bonus shorts you can download at the end. 😉

Fan Bait
Tempest’s music saved his soul. Now Max must save the musician.
Hunting a gang kidnapping music fans has cost Max Young his best friend’s life, his career, and his peace of mind. But he isn’t giving up. When the kidnappers appear to target Tempest – whose music saved Max’s soul – and Max is offered the job to protect him, he doesn’t think twice.
Working with Tempest threatens Max’s heart and skews his priorities because Tempest is fighting battles of his own and needs a protector, not a man consumed by thoughts of revenge.
Max’s choices? Find his best friend’s murderer or guard the man he’s falling for. Avenge the past or protect the future. Because he can’t do both.
