Like all writers, I’m a sucker for a good story. So when someone tells me “if they made a film of this no one would believe it!” what can I do but listen carefully?
What I got to hear was an epic tale of triumph over adversity. Like all good stories it had mystery and intrigue, drama and fanfare, scoundrels and heroes, the innocent and the ignorant.
It also had art and passion and tears – all served with a hefty helping of history and a seasoning of fate. The story reminded me that when something really matters to you, you take whatever life and fate fling at you and you deal with it. You may have to sit tight, you may have to bow your head for a while to weather the storm… but you do it, because it matters. You do not up sticks and walk away, because doing so would cause more damage than just taking it on the chin.
I can’t share the story yet because the journey isn’t over. The characters still have a ways to go before the waters calm, the dust settles and someone – hopefully the heroine – gets to write The End under this remarkable tale and collect her just rewards.
When that time comes, though, I’ll be there pen poised and camera at the ready. Because what writer can resist a good story?
