I’m delighted to welcome author Colette Davison to the blog today… and she has audiobooks in tow! I love to listen to audiobooks when I’m driving and even when I go for walks. They’re usually the kind of walks where it doesn’t feel like exercise. So, I’m all for finding some new ones. Wanna join me?
From Voices in My Head, to Audiobooks
I love listening to audiobooks, it means I can read whilst I’m walking the dog, driving, or even cleaning! That’s why it was important to me to turn some of my novels into audiobooks. To date, three of my novels have had the privilege: A Dance For Two, A Dance For You, and I Wished For You.
Whilst it was a fun process, the hardest part was giving up on hearing the voices in my head. Let me explain…
A new story always starts with a character and they always come with a voice, that’s crystal clear in my head. I know what they sound like. That voice sticks with throughout the entire writing process. My characters talk to me, and trust me, they love to give their opinion on the direction the story is taking!
When I started auditioning narrators for A Dance For Two, I was searching for someone who could make the voices in my head become a reality. To start with, I found it hard to listen to the characters speaking with different voices than I’d imagined. These were my characters, who I’d spent months listening to—okay, talking to; didn’t you know all writers were at least a little crazy?!—I wanted their voices to be perfect.
It didn’t take too long for me to realise that ‘perfect’ wasn’t someone miraculously being able to take the voices from my head and put them onto an audio track. Instead, it was a narrator who could take the essence of the characters and put that onto an audio track. I knew it when I heard the right narrator, but, just to be sure, I asked some fans of each book to listen to the auditions. If the characters they had enjoyed reading sounded right to them and to me, I knew I’d found the right narrator.
Taking my characters from my head, to the page, to audio, was an enjoyable journey in each case. I got excited every time I had a new chapter to listen to; it was almost as thought I was discovering my stories and characters all over again. Scenes that made me laugh, or cry, whilst I was writing them, made me laugh and cry whilst I was listening to them. I know I made at least one of my narrators cry in the recording booth!
Neil McFarlane (A Dance For Two; A Dance For You) and Piers Ryman (I Wished For You) did a wonderful job of bringing my characters to life. When you listen to those audiobooks, you might not be hearing the voices in my head, but you’re certainly hearing the next best thing.
What about you? What format do you prefer your books in: eBook, hard copy, or audiobook?
