If gritty crime drama is your thing, then come right on in. My guest today is Scottish author P.A. Turner, with her debut crime novel Comes the Dark. Using her experience as a frontline social worker, Pam Turner has crafted a story that an amazon reviewer has called “moving, harrowing, but ultimately inspiring and uplifting.”
Given the subject matter of sexual abuse and exploitation, this is not an easy book to read. And it’s most certainly one I need to read in installments to give myself ample time to process. But, it’s a story that’s worth reading, because the focus isn’t on how the characters got into their dark spaces. It’s firmly on how they get out of them and learn to move on. The writing is sharp and clean, and the characters will grip you and drag you along on their journey whether you want to follow or not.
Read it. You won’t regret it.

Comes the Dark exposes a corrupt politician’s shadowy world of human depravity.
In possession of information which could blow that shadowy world apart, 18-year-old Kyle escapes a life of abuse and goes on the run. One step ahead of his pursuers, he flees the harsh realities of Glasgow’s homeless underworld, to the apparent safety of a remote Scottish island.
There perhaps he can begin to recover from his past, and find hope, friendship, and a future.
But freedom has a price…
About P.A. Turner
P.A. Turner is a proud Scot, born in the county of Fife and now living in Angus. She spent her long career as a front-line social worker in the West of Scotland, where she developed a commitment to supporting victims and survivors of sexual exploitation. Her debut novel, “Comes the Dark” reflects this and her firm belief that people can and do recover from the most awful experiences. In 2017 her writing won the prestigious Scottish Association of Writers “Constable Silver Stag” trophy, which gave her the confidence to publish.
She lives with her son and their two dogs – a two year old jack russell and a lab puppy who gets into all sorts of scrapes.
P.A. Turner is currently busy writing her second novel, “Time Shadow” which is a dual-time LGBT romance with gritty bits.
