Today, I’m welcoming Isobel Starling to the blog once more – and I’m delighted by the post she’s brought with her. I love to listen to audiobooks while crunching numbers and I have a couple of intricate jobs coming up over the next few weeks. So, as usual, I’d started to pull out old favourites and look around me for new books to explore. So Isobel’s list of her five favourite audiobooks really couldn’t have come at a better time… and my must-listen pile just got a good bit taller. Thank you, Isobel – and here’s the lady herself! 🙂
Hello, my name is Isobel Starling, and I am an audiobook addict.
I always have an audiobook on the go. I spend all day in front of my laptop, writing, so the thought of yet more reading to relax doesn’t work for me. Audiobooks allow me to close my eyes and get lost in someone else’s world, so they are my go to for zoning out.
I’m currently listening to the final book in the “Fitz and the Fool” fantasy series by Robin Hobb. It is not necessarily M/M however, the relationship between the main characters is heartbreaking and soul bonded. Prince Fitzchivalry Farseer and his friend, The Fool, are my favorite M/M pairing ever. The audiobook is 45 hours long, and so I am rationing myself to a couple of hours per night.
For my author post, I have collated a list of my five favorite M/M romance audiobooks. It was hard work as there are so many great performances out there. Certain narrators are one click buys for me, and other’s I have tried because I liked the sound of the book and their narration sample. But all in all, I want more M/M in audio. Here we go:
Channeling Morpheus for Scary Mary
By Jordan Castillo Price. Narrated by Gomez Pugh
This audiobook was the gateway drug into M/M audiobooks for me. It’s the story of Michael, who lost his best friend Mary to a pack of vampires and so he is out to seek revenge on vampire kind. The only problem is that he targets Wild Bill, and Bill is not your average vamp. Gomez Pugh brings husky vampire Wild Bill and soft fey Teen vamp slayer Michael to life. The sex scenes, as read by Gomez are unforgettable knee tremblers! I also love the angle Jordan took with this series, not adhering to the usual story arc’s we associate with vampire books.
Fantastic! A must hear!
Rhapsody for Piano and Ghost
By Z.A. Maxfield. Narrated by Douglas Berger
I was in such a slump when I happened upon the beautiful gem of a book and it cheered me up so much. If you are a lover of music and dance, this will delight you. There was so much love and romance between the couples Fitz and Ari, and their ghostly lodgers Julian and Serge that the ending left me with a wide, tearful grin. The narration for this book was just perfectly pitched, and the narrator had a whole heap of accents from American to British RP and French. Delightful!
By Mason Thomas. Narrated by Joel Leslie
Initially, it was the cover that pulled me in, and then when I read the blurb, I was sold. I adore fantasy, and fantasy with M/M is a must for me. Mouse is an assassin of reduced stature. He is commissioned to discover what has become of the Duke’s son Lord Garron, and return him to the bosom of his family. But as Mouse carries out his orders he realizes that no one involved in the kidnap of Lord Garron has been honest with one another, and there is a deeper plot at work. The narration by Joel Leslie was great fun with lots of varied accents to bring the world to life.
The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks
By Josh Lanyon. Narrated by Max Miller
I tend to find I’m hit or miss with Josh Lanyon stories. Some I love and others I find too formulaic for my taste. I loved “The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks”. It was a well-plotted mystery with suspense, action and a delightful coupling. We have twenty-something artist Perry Foster, who returns home from a date to find a body in his bathtub, and his ex Military neighbor who reluctantly, comes to his rescue. The narration by Max Miller was superb.
By Z.A. Maxfield. Narrated by Gomez Pugh
The e-book was good, but it was the inspired narration by Gomez Pugh that made this story great. Nigel Gasp is a British rock star on a US tour, he is going off the rails, and ex-soldier Jeff Paxton is brought in as his bodyguard to ensure he stays on the straight and narrow. But secretly, Nigel isn’t so straight. Gomez Pugh does a marvelous impression of Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tuffnel as Nigel Gasp, which made this audiobook score eleven out of ten. Bravo!
So there you go – a list of fantastic listens. If you’ve never tried audiobooks before and don’t have an audible account why not give it a go for 30 days?. You can download my new release “As You Wish” for free by clicking the image:
