Today I’m very happy to have author Isobel Starling on the blog and to have the chance to ask her a few question. Isobel is promoting her new story Silken, which she has just released, while I take a look at her Shatterproof Bonds series next week. So, let’s find out a little more about Isobel Starling and her most recent story, Silken:
Question: Your favourite book boyfriend?
My favourite book boyfriend is called The Fool. He is an androgynous, mercurial character in Robin Hobb’s Fantasy trilogies “Farseer”, “The Tawny Man” and “Fitz and the Fool”. Fool is such an exquisite, mysterious heartbreaking character who will go to any means to keep his beloved Fitz safe. In all the thousands of books I’ve read, no other character has moved me as much as him.
Question: If you could meet three people, living or dead, who would you meet and why?
- I would love to have met David Bowie because he is my forever hero. I adore his ability to reinvent himself and his unceasing creativity. There is much of Bowie in Robin Hobb’s Fool character.
- I would love to meet Stephen Fry because he’s wonderful and one of my comedy heroes. He would be the perfect dinner guest.
- I would love to meet Chelsea Manning and give her a hug. She has been through so much to make the world aware of war crimes that were carried out in the Middle East by the US – 7 years of a 35 year sentence for whistle blowing, which she spent in a male military prison as a Trans woman. She is a hero and I hope she gets the peace to live her life free on her release.
Question: How did you come up with the plot for this story?
I came up for the plot for “Silken” when I was researching for my last book “Detective Fox”. The MC in that story Tom has some particular kinks that I needed to delve into. I found myself on Tumblr chatting to a young British man who had the same kink, and also enjoyed wearing lingerie. In his ‘real life’ he was a performer and his physique was exquisite. He wore a pair of lace panties better than any woman I’ve ever seen. He was very candid about his experiences online, and than led my research to discovering online D/s relationships. I find the concept fascinating so started to write using it as the basis for my couple for “Silken” to meet and get to know one another. There is a certain type of trust connection between long distance D/s couples that intrigues me and it was something I wanted to explore.
My thanks to Isobel… One thing I love about chatting with other authors is a chance to find new books to read. Silken is already on my Kindle since Matthew intrigued me from the moment I read the blurb. I’ve met a few dancers and none of them treated dancing like a job. It was much more than that, so I wanted to see how Matthew deals with having to give that up. And now I’ve got another book, or several, to hunt up. I’ve never read anything by Robin Hobbs, but reading Isobel’s description of Fool and Fitz, I really want to.
First, though, here’s what Silken is all about…
Length: 91 pages / short story
Genre: MM Romance
Matthew Fisher loved being a dancer, but his ten-year ballet career came to an abrupt end with a knee injury. He had to find a new way to make a living, and luckily, his sister was friends with Annabelle Ramsay-Aiken, only daughter of property magnate Sir James Aiken. She arranged an interview, and six months on the job training saw Matthew stepping out as a real estate agent for Aiken Luxury Lettings. Now, instead of stretching at the barre, Matthew spends his days inspecting the vacant London homes of their rich and famous clients.
Losing his dance career had left a huge hole in Matthew’s heart, and to fill it Matthew began a Tumblr blog dedicated to his fetish for wearing lingerie. He wanted to give his followers the impression he lived a charmed life, so decided to use A.L.L properties as locations for erotic photo shoots.
One of his online followers presses all of Matthew’s buttons, and a long distance, online Dom/sub relationship develops between them. But when the relationship suddenly moves from online fantasy to real life… can Matthew really submit?
