The WiP Shelf is without a doubt the biggest and most exciting part of my office. This is where the scary stuff happens, where whole new worlds suddenly appear and characters turn up and introduce themselves. My WiP Shelf is a busy place, especially since Jack & Gareth and the Dream Team moved in. So this page is where you can keep track of what’s going on. It’s also a great place for keeping myself honest. (If it’s here, it’s gonna get finished – promise!)
The Power of Zero Series
A Simple Mistake – The Power of Zero #5
An old lady who dies seemingly peacefully in her bed while her niece thinks she was murdered.
A bullying dance coach with wandering hands.
Security issues at Nancarrow Mining.
Holiday jobs and birthday party plans and a cry for help at 3am that calls Jack to Tokyo.
Between family, work, and their freelance jobs Jack and Gareth’s summer is far from relaxing. At least their personal issues are solved. Or so they think until a threat to their family tests all their certainties once more.
FanBait – A Power of Zero Side Story
A rock star who loves to tease. A bodyguard with a past that keeps him awake at night. A stalker, blackmail and a bunch of death threats… Tempest‘s concert tour was never going to be a straightforward assignment for any of the men involved in it. Add kidnappings and an undercover investigation that goes off the rails and it’s no wonder that lead stylist Skylar Payne calls in a little extra help.
Jack Horwood has never been on tour with a rock god, and he certainly isn’t amused to bump into a man who once abandoned him in the middle of an operation, but he always enjoys a challenge. Finding out who uses PlayREx Entertainment’s star performers to lure kidnapping victims is one challenge that’s right up his street. While babysitting a love-struck rock god and dispensing relationship advice to a stubborn security chief certainly isn’t.
Mouse Hunt – The Power of Zero #6
Jonathan Briggs, former spy and Jack’s mentor, has been found dead. With Rio abroad, Jack must search through Jon’s notes to help decide whether Jon’s past with MI6 has got him killed.
English villages are not Jack’s usual stomping ground, and he soon gets the feeling that nothing is quite as it seems. Jon’s notes remind him of events he’d rather forget, his nights are filled with disturbing sounds, and when strange offerings are being left on his doorstep, he’s starting to feel as if he’s walked into a horror movie.
Until a throwawy comment from Gareth starts to unravel the tangle and the real solution is much simpler, and much more horrific, than everyone thought.
Wayward – The Power of Zero #7
When Jack is poisoned while on a job, the police have little trouble tracing the drugs to HC Pharmaceuticals, a company renowned for developing highly effective treatments for head trauma victims.
The company’s CEO, investigating the thefts on the quiet, is accumulating an impressive collection of death threats until Aidan Conrad – personal friend and HC Pharma’s legal counsel – brings in Raf Gallant to solve the thefts and protect a beleaguered man and his family.
Raf has no issue with the assignment, but he almost blows a gasket when he realises that Aidan has sent Skylar Payne as his backup in place of the still recuperating Jack. Aidan is known for his tendency to play matchmaker, but as the case gets messier by the minute and Raf and Skylar fight with each other and their feelings, Aidan has to consider that – this time – he’s made a mistake.
Prospects – A Power of Zero Side Story
Dr. Tom Walken, geologist and mineral prospector, offers a large mineral find to Nancarrow Mining. Julian Nancarrow and Jack Horwood fly to check it out… only to find themselves under fire from parties unknown and running for their lives.
Julian Nancarrow is not amused… not by the attempts on his life, not by Jack seemingly sacrificing himself, and certainly not by travelling with an opinionated, fiery redhead who is far too enticing for Julian Nancarrow’s peace of mind.
FireWorks Security Series
Once Burned – FireWorks Security #2
What do you do if your back is to the wall and you’re the only one who believes you’re innocent?
As a trauma surgeon, Marius Leven saves people. He rarely allows anyone to save him, so Gabriel Coelho – already handicapped by being the eldest son of a cartel boss – has his work cut out to get close to the gorgeous man he’s guarded diligently, and anonymously, for weeks. He’s there when Marius needs support until the doctor finally thaws and sees him. Gabriel’s support doesn’t waver when Marius’s life shatters around him, when he’s accused of professional misconduct and criminal activity. But when more and more evidence points to Marius being the villain of the piece, Gabriel starts to lose faith.
Marius doesn’t let himself think about this latest betrayal. He fights against the lies and accusations and he finds a staunch, supportive ally in Kieran Ross, the ex-DEA agent from FireWorks Security. Kieran backs Marius to the hilt, even though it strains his relationship with his partner Joel Weston. When both Marius and Kieran offer themselves as bait in their hunt for truth, Joel and Gabriel must make a choice. Judge their partners guilty and leave them to their fate, or accept their innocence, go to the rescue and hope for forgiveness and a second chance when it’s all over.
Raven Bait – Adepts #1
They’re an urban myth. Fanatic groups consider them abominations and hunt them down. Governments all over the globe covet their skills. Welcome to the world of the Adepts.
Sir Archibald Redmore is nobody’s champion. He relishes a decent cup of tea and dissects people’s minds with surgical precision, mining for every last shred of usable information. Faced with a raft of murders and disappearances Archie Redmore can’t refuse to help. Not when it could as easily have been his body the police found floating in the River Thames.
Meeting Cynthia Gilchrist, stunning, sophisticated, well-connected, and the kind of woman any man would be proud to have on his arm, is a bonus. But a career as a trophy wife has never been on Cynthia’s agenda. While attracted to Archie, she can stand up for herself and protect the secret that can get both of them killed.
Welcome to the world of the Adepts, where loyalties shift like quicksand, skills are commodities, and nothing is quite as you expect it to be.
Lightning Foil – Adepts #2
Will they weather the storm together or will the lightning consume them both?
When lightning wielder Leigh St. Auban dishes out justice, she leaves dead bodies, burned buildings, and ruined electronics. She doesn’t leave any footprints that can lead the police, the military or even the Office for the Prevention of Accidents back to her. Or so she thinks.
Damon Sandhurst – assassin, protector, and one-man assault force – is one of the rarest and most sought-after adepts, a lightning foil. He rides herd on rogue adepts and prevents them from being acquired by enemy forces. Until he’s sent after Leigh St. Auban and finds himself on the acquisition list and in the crosshairs of more than one unfriendly agency.
Their meeting feels like fate. Their coming together is like a thunderstorm. Damon’s control tempers Leigh’s power and lightning wielder and lightning foil make the perfect team. They don’t deny the attraction between them, but more is at stake than a passionate encounter. Together they’re doomed. Apart they’re miserable. And they must join forces to stop a war.
Mangaka Yamashita Hitoshi lives a life creating dream worlds where he imagines himself as one of Sanada’s Brave, as assertive, attractive and able to gain and hold the attention of dangerous, capable fighter Kirigakure Saizō, where he can stand beside the beautiful man as his equal, even if it is right in the centre of the fire.
Real life is less accommodating. Hitoshi is quiet, shy and avoids people as he avoids trouble. He shares a flat with his inspiration, dashing detective Ishikawa Kazuhiro, but the most he’s yet managed to do is irritate the man. And unlike the character he inspires in Hitoshi’s story, Kazuhiro doesn’t react to Hitoshi at all. Not even with anger.
Hitoshi has always used his stories to make sense of people and work out things that puzzle him. But the story of Saizō and Kamanosuke’s journey is worlds away from his quiet life and unrequited feelings. Since Hitoshi can’t conjure up a situation that could force him and Kazuhiro to get to know each other or work together, will he end up living in his dream world, pining after his crush? Or will he learn from the characters he writes and step into the centre of the fire himself.
