Today’s Rainbow Snippet is from a historical fantasy romance called Brocade and Spices. I abandoned this when we moved house, but have lately been thinking that it’s a shame to let exiled Carolisian spice trader and blade master Alain de Navare languish in boredom.
Here, he has just returned from spending an afternoon at court, and – the way he tells it – charming the Karakian empress and all her ladies until his host, Karak’s biggest moneylender Staven, feels the need to caution him about some of the customs in Karak:
“I hope you managed to stay out of the emperor’s way.”
It wasn’t Alain de Navare who’d caught the emperor’s eye, but pointing that out would send Staven scrambling for cover, deciding to inspect his holdings outside the city or mayhap even have him jump on one of the ships he had lying in the harbour. Alain had his orders and he was more than a little enchanted by Staven’s tight ass and gorgeous mouth, so he decided to play. “Are you trying to tell me – in your prudish Karakian way – that the emperor is jealous or that he prefers the company of men?”
“Mind your tongue, Navare,” Staven hid his flaming face by making a show of pouring them more wine. “For the Emperor of Karak, jealousy is an acceptable fault.”
