If guitarist Pata hadn’t fallen seriously ill, I would have spent tonight at Wembley fangirling over Yoshi, Toshi and the rest of the crew from X Japan until my voice gave out. Since the concert tour has been postponed for a year, I’ll console myself by posting a snippet from FanBait, a Power of Zero side story that I hope to get submitted this year.
Max Young, head of StarStudded Security, has his hands, eyes and heart full with rock star Tempest. Shame he doesn’t quite grasp that bossing Tempest around as if the streetwise star was twelve isn’t the best way to have his affections returned. Apologies for overrunning the six allocated sentences by a fraction… I felt I needed the first sentence to set the scene.
Tempest’s defiant, anger-drenched performance held his audience spellbound for long moments after the end of the last song; then the stadium erupted into pandemonium.
Max had a blanket and bottled water waiting when Tempest stumbled backwards off the stage and slumped against the wall. He wrapped the fabric around the shivering, wrung-out singer and pressed the water bottle into his hand. “That was… true rock star magic,” Max breathed reverently, keeping his arm around Tempest’s shoulders.
“Whatever.” Tempest slipped out of his hold and pulled the blanket up so it covered his head before he turned towards his dressing room, leaving Max standing in the crowded space, too shocked to move.
“Well, well, well,” Min joined Max a moment later and dragged him out of the way of the stage hands beginning cleanup. “I would say you earned that.”
