We’re having the oddest weather this year – and seeing I live in England, that’s saying something. Two days ago I went out in a fleece top and wished for gloves. Today it’s 20 degrees and sunny. I don’t mind the grumpy, dull days, or the rain – they’re usually good days to settle down for some serious work, or even more serious writing. I do mind freezing at my desk, though. One shouldn’t even have to think about putting the heating on at the end of May!
So I don’t even want to think waking up on a balcony recliner in just a t-shirt and track bottoms. But that’s exactly where Kieran finds himself when Joel calls for him. This is a snip from Kieran’s view of the previous week’s scene, when Joel watched over him as he slept.
From Leap of Faith:
“For fuck’s sake, Kieran, don’t do this!”
Kieran Ross raised his head at the exasperated tone and squinted into bright sunlight. When had it become morning? He shivered, noted with surprise that he was stretched out on a recliner on Joel’s balcony wearing only the sweats and thin tee he’d gone to bed in, and that he was cold.
Joel stood by the sliding door that led from balcony to living room, arms folded over his chest. His pale hair was mussed and anger and concern fought in the narrowed, ocean blue eyes.
Kieran didn’t remember waking, didn’t remember stepping out onto the balcony, and it all pointed to him having lost track of time, again. When it was quiet like this, without work or Joel close by to distract him, the screaming in his head was hard to ignore.
Intriguing! 🙂
I especially love the last paragraph — and more specifically the last line. Beautifully written.
Thank you.
Oh, wow. Poor Kieran. Though maybe he either needs to tell Joel what’s going on or Joel needs to cut him some slack if he’s dissociating like that. It’s not exactly something he’s doing on purpose.
Joel knows. And he’s doing his best to help.
Bbrrrr! Poor Kieran. I know what you mean about the weather. Saturday went for a walk in t-shirt and shorts and was too hot. Yesterday took a motorbike ride with fleece, winter gloves etc under my bike gear and was frozen numb! 🙁
Yes. I actually put the heating on for a while. And that’s just ridiculous.
So much emotion in that scene. I feel so sad for each of them and am curious as to how they’ll work it all out.
Oh, no. Kieran’s fear and disorientation are so clear.
