Good afternoon, snippetteers! If you celebrated the holiday, I hope you had a good one. The builders didn’t get finished before the festivities, so all we bothered with this year were lights and music and food. I saw a post online about someone having two Christmas trees each year. One for lights, tinsel and decorations, and one for memories. And everyone who visited their home over the holidays could add a memory to the tree if they so wished.
I fell in love with that idea and I’m thinking of starting our own memory tree. Why? Because it’s so easy to get stuck in the past. It’s easier, still, to get stuck on negative things and drag them around like a dirty shroud. Having an actual, physical space to place our favourite memories? Definitely a good thing.
Like most years, 2019 has been a mixed bag of good things and not so good ones. And yes, I’m one of the many authors caught up in Dreamspinner’s problems. What good can possibly come from that well of anger and disappointment and broken trust? I got to read / edit Jack’s story again, and remind myself why telling this story has always been important to me. I got to work with the amazing Miranda from Pavelle Art on new covers. And I’m just about ready to launch.
The first two books, Job Hunt and Ghosts, are available in my bookstore for anyone who reads epub. Job Hunt will go live on amazon / KU on January 15th, and Ghosts will follow on January 29th.
So far, I’ve been snippeting from Job Hunt, but for today’s snip I’d like to move on to Ghosts. Why? Because one mainstay of all my stories is the firm belief that endings are new beginnings, that we can rescue good results from bad situations. And in Ghosts, Jack is learning that lesson.
From Ghosts
“I screwed up, and it almost cost you your life. I need to remember that.”
“You also saved my life that day. You need to remember that too.”
Jack’s lashes swept down, and this time he was hiding. Well, Gareth was having none of that. He took a firm grip on Jack’s chin and forced his head up.
“You’re not hearing me, Jack,” he growled. “You seem to believe that the truth is a one-way street when it’s not. Every truth has at least two sides. So maybe you got too absorbed collecting that intel and I got shot. But you also saved my life. Both things are true, whether you like it or not.”
“You’re saying that failure can be redeemed?”
“I’m saying that it’s pointless to fixate on endings and overlook that they’re also new beginnings.”
A deep breath shuddered out of Jack’s throat. His voice, when it came, was whisper-soft. “Always?”
“Always.”

Of Books and Cooking on Christmas Eve
Great snippet. The books sound fab, good luck with the release.
Thank you.
Beautifully put, both your snippet and your autobiographical contemplation of this year’s events. You’ve woven together in a similar theme about the mixed nature of life and its events, which I emphasize with only too keenly. (wry grin) Sending you virtual hugs while you write your way through this mess…your eloquence is inspiring, the fact that you’ve found eloquence while coping with all this. May it continue to inspire you as well as others and hoping you’ll find a place for your stories amidst the muddle. (hugs)
Thanks so much. I try and be grateful for the days when I can write, and focus on editing and production on the days when I can’t. That way, I’m at least a little in control…
Awww. Sweet scene. I think I’m in love with them.
I certainly am!
Very touching scene…I love how they whisper at the end and it releases that tension.
And, of course, Jack doesn’t believe all he hears.
Lovely scene.
