I had the most bizarre writing experience this week. I love working out bits of dialogue and plot while I go for a walk and usually sit down to pen notes as soon as I’m back home.
Very occasionally I dictate a scene into my phone. Not often, since the dictating lark is very much part of my day job and I want to keep the fiction separate, even in my own mind.
What never happened before, though, is me walking blindly down the road, headphones on and half sobbing into my phone until I had come to the end of one of the most gut-wrenching scenes I’ve ever done. Bizarre is really the only word for it. That scene had been nowhere on my horizon and when I surfaced from whatever that was, I’d walked all the way to the next village. And needed to get back home.
10,000 steps accomplished well before lunch. I blame my new music and whatever was in the air that morning. And I can say one thing with certainty: Jack and Gareth are back.
So… for today’s snippet we’re staying with Swings & Roundabouts and follow on from the last two snips. We left Jack in an alley, backing up Gareth and Raf during a bit of breaking and entering. Now he’s got to earn his pay since the security guard patrolling the building has finally decided to earn his. And Gareth’s responses may not be quite what he expects.

“Heads up,” Jack spoke into his comm. “The guard’s coming up to your floor and he’s shed his tablet, so I can’t distract him. Be ready to drop from sight.”
Jack’s gut clenched and his palms sweated despite Gareth’s calm tone. Watching from the sidelines was hell. “Why the fuck can’t I see you?” he complained.
“We’re in the bathroom.”
There was a beat of dead silence as Jack’s brain worked overtime.
