In this week’s edition of rainbow snippets, Gareth gets a bit of an unpleasant surprise. He’s been holed up with Aidan, reviewing open casefiles and has forgotten about the parents evening at Nico and Daniel’s school. It’s not until he needs Jack’s help and calls him, that he remembers the event and learns that Jack is at the school by himself.
Wanting to redeem himself, Gareth tries to get home and at least make dinner for Jack, but the traffic puts paid to that plan too. So here, he’s feeling a bit apprehensive, probably expects a comment or complaint or two… everything except what he does get the moment he steps through the door:

Jack’s laughter drifted from the living room, happy and carefree, the sound wrapped Gareth in warmth as if he’d strayed into a patch of sunshine.
“One of the weirder things I’ve done,” Jack said to someone Gareth couldn’t see. “Honestly, if you ever want to feel totally out of place, go to a parents’ evening. The conversations are just…inane…I ended up pretending I was undercover, so I wouldn’t crack up laughing. And do I look like a cute single dad or something – I kept getting hit on.”
Really now, at their kids’ school’s parents’ evening? Gareth bit his lip. Maybe the thing slipping his mind had been an even worse move than he’d thought.
