And now, for something a little different. If you like cowboys and fancy something beyond the more common wolf or dragon shifters, then you really should check out Maz Maddox’s new book, Heartache & Hoofbeats, where you get a sherriff who is a… wait for it….Centaur shifter! Delicously different, right? And next, we have Maz Maddox herself answering the very important question: why Centaurs?
So, why Centaurs?
Why the hell not? Why should wolves, dragons, and were-things have all the fun?
Just so we’re clear– I also love the entire spectrum of were-things and shifters of all flavors. I don’t want people out there to think I have some apprehension about the traditional and lovely things that made this shade of fantasy unique.
Humans have a rich history of amazing mythical creatures that once reigned supreme in our stories and fables. It seems like you can’t tip-toe into any creation story or epic fantasy tale without tripping over half-beasts, demons or spirits. As our cultures and societies shift and change, as do the wild fantasies that entice us. Something always remains though — we always want something primal, strong and wild.
When setting out to craft Heartache & Hoofbeats, I wanted to do something different. Shifter stories, especially romances, have a rawness to them that I’m drawn to. Pair that with my obsession with cop-dramas, men hellbent on justice, a dash of bone-melting passion, and you have a perfect storm of fun.
Cal and Jesse’s story is my first attempt at sharing my little storm cloud of love. I fell head over heels for these two and poured my heart and soul into making their story as magical as I could. I hope readers get the fun, steamy ride I was aiming to give them and come visit Stallion Ridge again once they’re done.
Hey, what’s not to love about Centaur cowboys and outlaws, right?

Like all centaur shifters, Sheriff Calhoun is the epitome of honor. He protects his small town of Stallion Ridge and its people from any threat large or small.
When word comes in that the notorious Iron Bandits are making a play for a train in his territory he’s both livid and invigorated. If anyone can bring these thieves to justice it’s him and his crew.
What he did not expect was having a charming, whiskey-eyed outlaw dumped in his lap that challenged everything he thought he knew.

Maz is an m/m romance fanatic, dabbles in yaoi, adores dinosaurs and writes romance stories with a healthy heaping of adventure mixed in.
When she’s not pairing up Centaurs with bank robbers, she’s plotting new stories and sending inappropriate texts to her friends.
