Since we’ve been away on a busman’s holiday to Cornwall last week, I have a slightly longer snip today… hope y’all don’t mind! I really couldn’t shorten this any further, but I love Jack here and would love to share him…
We’re still with Swings & Roundabouts, where Jack attended the parents evening alone because Gareth had urgent stuff to sort out at work.
To his surprise, Jack – who would have sworn that he had no clue when it came to dealing with family of any kind – proves rather knowledgable when it comes to matters of discipline.
From Swings & Roundabouts
Jack found himself surrounded by a bunch of mothers he knew by sight but hadn’t ever spoken to. They’d pulled him into conversation the moment he’d arrived, no doubt trying to make him feel welcome, and he had felt like that—sort of— until one woman had asked his opinion on how to get her daughter to eat more than carrot sticks, and another wanted suggestions on how to entice a teenage boy to tidy his room. Then Jack stood gaping, totally caught out.
What the fuck did he know?
Quite a lot, as it turned out, the moment the imp in his head took over. “I don’t know how you make someone eat,” he said. “As for dealing with mess… well, there’s the tried and tested Flynn method and then, there’s mine. A little more… unconventional…but just as effective.”
“What’s your method?”
“I’d stuff everything lying around into a bin liner and toss it, since he clearly doesn’t need it. No mess, no argument.”
The laughter was loud. “Much argument,” the woman disagreed. “And I’d have to send him to school in socks and boxers.”
